Oil on Panel
This little painting depicts a small section from the centre of the Liberation of Saint Peter fresco by Raphael. The close cropping of this image leaves only St. Peter, the angel and one of the guards visible, all situated behind the bars of the jail cell. A layer of bubble wrap has been incorporated into the bottom left of the painting, almost completely obscuring the figure of St. Peter. This leaves the angel as the central figure in the image, especially as they are surrounded by a bright halo, which acts as the main light source in the painting. The bubble wrap has been carefully painted so as to suggest to the viewer the appearance of the original beneath. The bars of the cell create a grid across the face of the remainder of the image.
