Thatcher, 2013, Oil on Panel, 15x20cm
This painting was created in 2013 shortly after the death of Thatcher. The news of her death and the ensuing reporting on the funeral proceedings led to a sizeable dissemination of her image throughout the media meaning there was an abundance of source material from which a painting could be made. It was interesting to observe the media use the news of her death to construct a narrative, either painting her as a hero and national treasure of Britain, or as a Villain and destroyer of national services. Either bias ultimately ignores the nuances of the political situation of the 80s and serves to support the establishment in Britain by suggesting a deep-rooted heterogeneousness when it is merely surface level.
The black and white palette are indicative of a photographic format, though a dated one, as is the blurred background. The painting adheres to the source image closely and removes the image from its media context and thus from the narrative it was woven into.
